    Project description:

Hello there… I run a not-for-profit website about Soul Music. Several years ago, there was a javascript audio (and video) player that was hosted by Yahoo that I ran on my site. After Yahoo kind of went belly-up, and stopped hosting the js, I hired a guy to develop my own version which, until recently, worked great.

It’s a pop-up player that plays both my own hipcast hosted mp3s, and YouTube audio, in the order the links appear on any page. It still works fine in Chrome and Safari etc. on a PC – but… on IOS it seems to ‘hang’ on ‘buffering’ the YouTube audio forever, although the hipcast mp3s appear to play fine.

I also found out recently, after trying to upgrade my site to https, that the play buttons disappear entirely in secure mode… at this point I’m not sure what to do, but on a site with hundreds of audio links, it’s not possible for me to lose that functionality in the name of ‘security’.

Anyway, please take a look at my site, and it’s various pages and see what I’m talking about:

It’s all about the love of this music and the people who made it. Please Help!

    Thanks!!

    1. Aravindo .

When you switch to https, it is important that all your links, scripts, and images are also pointing to only https, e.g. use “https://cosimocode.com/player.js”. That explains why the images and player don’t work with https.

For the issue with iOS it is weird indeed. I was able to reproduce this with the developer tools using browserstack.com. I see 8 MB are downloaded as auto-video file, but the status stays in “buffering”. There are several requests to youtube and then it stop. In contrast, on the firefox on desktop there is a new request every few seconds while the audio is playing. Maybe this method of including the youtube player is not supported any more.

Is the player open source? Otherwise it will be hard to help you with it.

Aravindo – THANK YOU for replying! I hear what you’re saying about the script having to have an https address as well. If I did go that route, would it be better to just use “/player.js” as the script is hosted at that domain already? I am in the process of rebuilding the pages on the site, and removing any links to images from another of my sites, and uploading them there instead, then linking them that way “/images/…jpg” etc. – wondering if that would work for the js as well.

The player is unique in that it does appear to be supported by YouTube, and works great in Chrome, etc across all my sites, as you’ve seen the problem arises in IOS – which is now even worse in Safari on the iPhone, as the player ‘pops out’ then doesn’t pop back in, obscuring the text on the page, in addition to not playing anything… ugh.

If you would like to take a look at the source, I’d be glad to email the file to you, or I believe you can access it at this url: http://cosimocode.com/player.js

At this point, I’m not as concerned with making everything ‘secure’ as I am with the player being ‘responsive’ across all platforms. Once again, Thank you for your interest!

THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR RESPONDING!
I hope you have taken a look at my sites, and checked out the issue with the player on IOS… lately it has become even worse, as if you try and play a link on any of my souldetective.com pages on an iPhone, not only doesn’t it play, but the player doesn’t ‘pop back’, and is blocking the text. This is odd because it doesn’t seem to do that on any of the cosimocode.com pages. So, what would be the best way to go bout this, should I send you a copy of the javascript? If so, where should I send it? THANK YOU AGAIN!
