Overview
LocalEyes. a platform cooperative, is a digital toolkit for 21st century community organising and  the effective management and application of local resources.

Whether it be people’s skills or car sharing, calculating carbon footprints or happiness indexing, this comprehensive local resource management system, hyper local social network and community organising toolkit is helping people improve and sustain our communities, and ultimately our planet, for future generations.

Any resource that can be measured can become a layer of LocalEyes. That might be people’s priorities, interests, skills, local groups, their activities, items to swap, sell, freecycle, carbon footprints, happiness and well-being, our housing stock, the green and brown field sites, through to our horticulture and geology.

Many tools already exist to map some of these resources but do so largely in silo, in private or they become very sparse on authentic data at the hyper-local level. To date, there is no application that can capture all the resources available in an area enabling the cross pollination of data resulting in efficient and effective planning and replication of best practice projects for social and environmental benefit.

As multiple resource applications are developed within the LocalEyes framework, they will assist communities and societies at large gain more control over the resources available to them which in turn will assist us in achieving our collective sustainability goals and help to preserve life on Earth.

VocalEyes
Through the VocalEyes digital democracy, crowdsourcing & participatory budgeting app, key priorities of local communities and organisations can be identified. As priorities emerge, other LocalEyes apps will be able to respond to these community requirements by proactively recommending local resources available to help progress popular ideas into tangible projects.

The VocalEyes App is our most developed application to date and is currently being used by mainly by organisations with internal intranets such as colleges and universities. We integrate using a seamless “Single Sign On” (SSO) solution to the Local Area Network, Intranet or VLE (e.g. Moodle or SharePoint).

Project Overview

Projects undertaken within the LocalEyes framework can vary depending on the interest of the volunteers. We will scope this with you to find the best fit and identify areas that you are most excited by.

As an example, projects could be software development, working on feature upgrades to the VocalEyes digital democracy App such as crowdsourcing, participatory budgeting, community organising, gamification, teams, projects, task management or events. This app currently has approx 15,000 active users.

Alternatively projects could be the development of other LocalEyes apps such as car sharing, carbon footprinting, happiness indexing, skill sharing, interests, marketplace etc.

Projects could also involve more front end and promotional activities. Engaging organisations who wish to adopt more co-operative principles and more of a tribal leadership and self organising open, transparent culture.

Technology & Platform

The VocalEyes application is a web hosted service, built in PHP on MySQL and uses the Yii framework with Twitter Bootstrap. The codebase predominately uses HTML, CSS, JavaScript, JQuery, Ajax and XML. All issues and bug tracking are managed via GitHub.

Our Commitment

LocalEyes is a project that has been under development for several years and our team is totally dedicated to the vision. We would like to reassure volunteers that we are 100% committed to this project and will provide any ongoing training and support required for projects.

We actively encourage volunteers and members of the open source community to engage with the LocalEyes project by identifying resource layers that interest them and co-developing the application together.
